The situation

Gump's customer base was older and shrinking, and the email list was shrinking with it. Paid media was being judged on short-term ROAS, which kept buying the same customers until there were fewer of them to buy.

What we changed

We pulled Meta off ROAS optimization for three straight quarters and ran it as a lead generation engine to rebuild the list. That meant accepting worse-looking numbers for most of the year, on purpose, with the client informed and on board.

Holiday is where luxury retail makes its year. The goal was to walk into Q4 with an audience large enough to sell to.

The result

Q4 Meta revenue grew 2.4x year over year on 1% less spend, and conversions doubled. Across the business, revenue was up 44% and ROAS up 43%.

The year spent building the audience is what paid off in Q4.

Timeline

Three quarters of list building, then the Q4 harvest.
